Personal Bio

RUSSELL WELCH is a jazz guitarist/composer based in New Orleans, and a native of Jackson, Mississippi. He leads the The Russell Welch Hot Quartet (Trio/Duo), a world class, string jazz band in the Django Reinhardt tradition. He is a band member of the Hot Club of New Orleans, Meschiya Lake and Little Big Horns, Jumbo Shrimp Jazz Band,  the Shampanyaks (aka Champagniacs), King James and the Special Men, and Neva Wright and the My Bads. He free lances as a recording and on-demand, performing guitarist with many other New Orleans bands, including Aurora Nealand and the Royal Roses, Shotgun Jazz Band, inter alia.

Russell is a "Best Traditional Jazz Artist," "Best Guitarist" nominee, and twice (**) a "Best Traditional Jazz Album" nominee of New Orleans' Offbeat Magazine.

His first album was the all-original "Showarama Hot Trio"(**). His second album, "Pour Vous" featured original arrangements of traditional New Orleans jazz classics. His third, all-original "Mississippi Gipsy" was called "masterful" and a "tour de force" by Offbeat Magazine. The fourth, "Acetate Sessions"(**), a mix of originals and classics, was recorded using acetate masters and 1930's recording equipment, to recreate a vintage recording, which "crackle(s) with the energy of youth discovering someplace magical...(and) sound(s) as fresh as tomorrow" -Offbeat Magazine.

Russell composed, and his band performed, live, a commissioned, original jazz ballet score for "Silk and Smoke," in which the New Orleans Marigny Opera House Ballet Company danced Gretchen Erickson's original choreography. “Silk and Smoke” was selected for performance at the 2019 International Women in Dance Leadership Conference.

Russell has a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi, where, as a junior, he was named "Outstanding Soloist" and his USM Jazz Sextet the top jazz combo, at the nationally prestigious University of North Texas Jazz Festival.
